Key Objectives

The mission of Player Development is to manage and promote the development of internationally successful Australian players.  A number of key strategic objectives have been formulated which, when implemented as a coordinated and integrated national program, will achieve the overall goal.

The following is an explanation of the objectives of Player Development:
1.      To create a national high performance pathway with clearly defined entry and exit points.

This involves a national philosophy which includes the implementation of national coaches and reporting lines.  This will ensure athletes will be exposed to similar environments in every state and will prevent confusion of information and duplication of resources.

2.
To develop highly focused and resourced collective training environments, called National High Performance Academies.

The National high Performance Academies are the pinnacle training environments for players.  These Academies are situated in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, each is directed by a Head Coach, who also serves as a National Coach.  The academies are supported by the state programs, which serve as a feed-in system of elite players to the National High Performance Academies.

3.
Increased quality and quantity of competitive playing opportunities.

This includes increasing the number and quality of Kia Pro Circuit Events (Professional ITF Events) and Australian Money Tournaments, as well as initiating playoffs for wild card opportunities.

4.
Focus on athlete identification and training opportunities.

Tennis Australia is providing events and programs to identify athletes first, rather than identify tennis players.  The Talent Identification Program will work hand in hand with talent identification in all the states, to develop a national approach.

5.
Enhancement of international junior competitions and tours.

Further develop international junior competitive opportunities in Australia and manage a series of overseas tours designed to expose Australian players to international events and the experiences associated with life on the professional tour.

6.      Clearly defined systems of responsibility and accountability for athletes, parents, coaches and support staff.

Through the implementation of criteria and clearly defined expectations and procedures, high standards will be maintained by all parties with an athlete.  The stakeholders should uphold the high level of expectations through clearly defined systems of accountability and not lower these standards to the needs or desires of an individual.

7.      Development of coach, parent and athlete educational opportunities.

Tennis Australia is responsible for the delivery of information and education and is developing a structure which is less hierarchical and allows coach to better fit in where their skills and interests lie.
