Ashley Fisher enjoyed a career best season in 2009, cracking the doubles top 20 in June on the back of several excellent results on the ATP Tour. His highlight was a runner-up appearance at the prestigious Miami tournament with compatriot Stephen Huss, as well as finals appearances in Johannesburg and Munich. He reached two other quarterfinals as well as recording a third round showing at Roland Garros. Ashley started playing tennis at the age of five and grew up with a tennis court in his backyard. But he gave tennis up in favour of table tennis, a sport in which he was ranked within the national top 10, between the ages of eight and 16. “I figured I had to pick one and tennis might open up a few more doors [than table tennis] as it’s hard to compete globally [at table tennis],” he says. Ashley played college tennis at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth between 1994 and 1998, reaching the doubles final at the NCAA tournament in 1996 (w/Jason Weir-Smith, USA) and, in addition to a finance degree, he also earned All-American honours in doubles in 1996–97. When he’s not playing tennis, Ashley enjoys playing cards, reading and watching movies.
