Samantha Stosur breezed into the second round of the French Open - the only Australian to complete a match as rain yet again played havoc with the Roland Garros schedule today.

Stosur, the No.27 seed, took just 55 minutes to beat Jamea Jackson of the United States 6-1 6-2 before persistent showers prompted a mass cancellation of matches for the second straight day.

Her next opponent looked most likely to be Maria Kirilenko of Russia, who led Italy's Maria Elena Camerin 6-3 5-0 when play was called off for the day around 6.30pm local time.

In the men's singles, Australian Chris Guccione led Greek qualifier Konstantinos Economidis 7-6 (8-6) at the stoppage.

Queensland veteran Nicole Pratt had her first-round match against Italy's Flavia Pennetta cancelled and Casey Dellacqua, the 22-year-old wildcard from Western Australia, had her first-round match against Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand called off.

Only seven matches were completed on Sunday's opening day of the tournament and the same was the case today, leaving organisers facing a massive backlog with more rain forecast for Paris this week.

Stosur's victory continued a strong run on clay for the Australian, who upset Amelie Mauresmo in the second round of the Italian Open earlier this month.

It was also her second victory against Jackson, having won their only other meeting - a three-setter in the round of 16 in Pittsburg in 2004.

Stosur broke Jackson in the fourth game of the opening set after the weather had delayed the start of their match by about four hours.

The Australian won the next game to love with an ace for a 4-1 lead and broke Jackson in the following game before holding serve with a sharp backhand down the line to close out the set.

Stosur broke Jackson in the opening game of the second set and again in the third to race to a 3-0 lead just as the rain started to fall again.

The match was suspended with Stosur down 15-30 in the fourth game of the second set.

The players returned to the court after more than an hour and a double fault by the Australian handed Jackson her first break of the match.

Stosur broke back immediately when Jackson hit a forehand into the net.

The 23-year-old Stosur held serve but had to wait until her next service game to close out the match when Jackson sent a backhand long.
